As an online developer and expert, I’m constantly learning new abilities. Knitting Skillshare… to stay up to date with the trade and make customers pleased. To do so, I have actually relied greatly on online knowing over the past five years. Usually, when I wish to learn something new, I just go to YouTube and enter a concern and wish for the best.
Most of the time, I get videos taught by “specialists” with unlimited ad breaks and pitches to buy their product. I imply, what else can you expect from “free courses.” Just recently, fed up with the poor quality and questionable knowledge shared on complimentary platforms, I turned to an online knowing platform I keep hearing so much about: Skillshare.
Impressed by Skillshare’s high-quality totally free classes, I registered for a yearly membership (and scored a 40% discount, more on that in the Skillshare pricing section) and dove much deeper into the Skillshare courses used to premium members.
I will share my experience as a Skillshare learner here in this in-depth review. While some reviews for online courses tend to be regurgitations of sales pages, everything you will check out comes straight from my own experience as a devoted learner.
If you are looking for a TLDR variation of this review, here it is:
The large amount of new content that is added to the platform weekly is enough to keep even the busiest of brains engaged. Whether you want to pick up a new skill to make your resume shine, restyle your home, or master a pastime “just for the hell of it,” you can easily find dozens of chances to level up your collection. Even more, Skillshare’s generous payment plans for instructors means that there’s no scarcity of excellent instructors producing premium and new content regularly.
Now, if only there was more time in the day to learn all of it!
Communities of similar students
When you have specific niche interests like Board Game Style or Floral Embroideries, feeling part of a peer-group can be hard. In between Skillshare’s Groups, Workshops, and differed instructors, you’re opening a bonanza of opportunity for connection and community building. This is a big perk for us “nerds” to feel part of something bigger than our own individual efforts AND it permits us to find out not only from the specialists, but from each other.
Easy to use all around
It took me all of 5 minutes to produce my account, login, browse for content I’m interested in, and discover a course that fit the expense. I was diving deep into my first course in less than 20 minutes, excited to find even more content to feast on.
Congratulations to Skillshare for making an easily navigable desktop AND mobile platform, and for consisting of a start/stop functionality that synchronizes across devices.
Between the capability to “favorite” great teachers and save Skillshare classes to individualized lists, not to mention the Discovery section of the Skillshare app, I am never for want of brand-new material to discover. And the reality that I get to find out on MY schedule makes Skillshare the equivalent of the 100 emoji.

The Downsides (Cons) of Skillshare
These are the primary downsides of Skillshare:
Not completely available
Not every instructor ROCKS
The ads are annoying, so you’ll want to pay
Not totally accessible
As I was evaluating courses and building my Skillshare review, I was constantly dissatisfied by the absence of closed captioning available on the videos. This essentially makes the platform difficult to use for those who are hearing not able and impaired to check out lips. Minus points for exclusivity!
Not every teacher ROCKS
The difference in quality of instructors can be a continuous obstacle on your method to understanding gain. Given that having the ability to teach effectively is a hard-won ability in it of itself, it would be naive to think that every trainer on the platform stands out at the basics of mentor.
A good quality indicator is the variety of students a course has hosted, as higher numbers tend to associate with higher quality instructors. However, this isn’t constantly the case– some courses are simply specific niche enough to not appeal to the “masses” anyway.
Conclusion: is Skillshare Worth it?
The possibility to learn for knowing’s sake is reason enough for me to soundly announce that Skillshare is worth it. The hands-on jobs and ability to get in touch with others, including professionals in your preferred fields of knowledge, makes the $14 a month cost a bargain. The onus is on YOU to figure out which courses would bring you the most value, whether you intend to boost your resume with gleaming competitive skills or assert yourself as a professional hobbyist.
Skillshare members can gain far more than just brand-new skills from the courses. You’ll fall in love with finding out once again, satisfy competent and inspired peers that will challenge and influence you, and may find yourself addicted (nay, obsessed!) with gaining understanding.
