As an online developer and specialist, I’m constantly discovering new skills. Skillshare Values… to keep up with the trade and make clients happy. To do so, I’ve relied heavily on online learning over the past 5 years. Normally, when I want to learn something new, I just go to YouTube and type in a question and hope for the very best.
Most of the time, I get videos taught by “specialists” with endless advertisement breaks and pitches to buy their merchandise. I imply, what else can you get out of “free courses.” Recently, fed up with the poor quality and questionable knowledge shared on free platforms, I turned to an online knowing platform I keep hearing so much about: Skillshare.
Impressed by Skillshare’s top quality free classes, I signed up for an annual subscription (and scored a 40% discount rate, more on that in the Skillshare rates section) and dove much deeper into the Skillshare courses offered to premium members.
I will share my experience as a Skillshare student here in this in-depth review. While some evaluations for online courses tend to be regurgitations of sales pages, whatever you will read comes directly from my own experience as a devoted student.
If you are looking for a TLDR version of this review, here it is:
The sheer amount of brand-new content that is added to the platform weekly suffices to keep even the busiest of brains engaged. Whether you wish to get a brand-new skill to make your resume shine, restyle your house, or master a pastime “just for the hell of it,” you can easily discover dozens of opportunities to level up your collection. Even more, Skillshare’s generous payment plans for teachers suggests that there’s no shortage of excellent instructors producing high-quality and brand-new content routinely.
Now, if only there was more time in the day to discover it all!
Communities of like-minded students
When you have specific niche interests like Board Video game Style or Floral Embroideries, feeling part of a peer-group can be hard. In between Skillshare’s Groups, Workshops, and varied instructors, you’re unlocking a treasure trove of opportunity for connection and neighborhood structure. This is a big perk for us “nerds” to feel part of something bigger than our own specific efforts AND it permits us to find out not only from the specialists, but from each other.
Easy to use all around
It took me all of 5 minutes to produce my account, login, search for material I have an interest in, and discover a course that fit the costs. I was diving deep into my first course in less than 20 minutes, eager to find much more content to devour.
Kudos to Skillshare for making an easily navigable desktop AND mobile platform, and for consisting of a start/stop functionality that syncs across gadgets.
In between the ability to “preferred” fantastic teachers and save Skillshare classes to tailored lists, not to mention the Discovery section of the Skillshare app, I am never ever for want of brand-new material to find out. And the fact that I get to learn on MY schedule makes Skillshare the equivalent of the 100 emoji.

The Disadvantages (Cons) of Skillshare
These are the primary drawbacks of Skillshare:
Not totally available
Not every instructor ROCKS
The advertisements are irritating, so you’ll want to pay
Not totally available
As I was testing courses and constructing my Skillshare review, I was continuously disappointed by the absence of closed captioning available on the videos. This essentially makes the platform impossible to use for those who are hearing impaired and not able to read lips. Minus points for exclusivity!
Not every instructor ROCKS
The variation in quality of instructors can be a consistent difficulty on your method to knowledge gain. Since having the ability to teach successfully is a hard-won ability in it of itself, it would be naive to believe that every instructor on the platform excels at the fundamentals of teaching.
A good quality indicator is the number of students a course has actually hosted, as greater numbers tend to correlate with higher quality instructors. This isn’t always the case– some courses are simply specific niche enough to not appeal to the “masses” anyhow.
Conclusion: is Skillshare Worth it?
The chance to discover for knowing’s sake is reason enough for me to peacefully proclaim that Skillshare deserves it. The hands-on jobs and capability to get in touch with others, including specialists in your wanted fields of understanding, makes the $14 a month cost a bargain. The onus is on YOU to determine which courses would bring you the most worth, whether you intend to bolster your resume with gleaming competitive abilities or assert yourself as an expert hobbyist.
Skillshare members can acquire a lot more than just brand-new skills from the courses. You’ll fall in love with learning again, meet skilled and motivated peers that will challenge and inspire you, and may find yourself addicted (nay, obsessed!) with acquiring knowledge.
